No Foreigners Allowed!

So there we were yesterday, finally closing in on a place to stay for the summer. A great location, right in the middle of Haidian Huangzhuang. A bit on the small side, but nothing we couldn't handle.

Everything was in place. We were ready to have a Beijing friend go over and deliver a cash deposit. And then I received this email from the current tenant, whose lease we were going to finish out...

I am sorry I have bad news for you. The agency said i cannot give contract to foreigner cuz you need to register in beijing. If you were Chinese I could give you without problem. the problem they cannot register you. Becuase the time periiod is too samll.

Put aside for the moment that this is exactly the kind of transaction we negotiated without any problem last summer, for the same amount of time in a very nearby complex. So it can be done.

Yes, gang, there still are barriers to foreigners in China, even right in the heart of the university and technology district of Beijing. Wow!
