The Waiting Is The Hardest Part

This past December, an article I have written was accepted for publication at the Journal of Contemporary China. This is great news in that it represents my first foray into publishing research on Chinese politics and public policy.

So when exactly will this article appear in print? This is where academic publishing timetables enter into the story. The article is currently slated for publication in the May 2012 issue of the journal. Yes, that's right...It will be another entire year before this research sees the light of day.

And this is not an atypical story. Right now, I have two other articles that are scheduled to appear in print later this year. Both of these pieces of research were originally written two-three years ago. One in fact was drafted before we moved to China back in 2008, although I have been tinkering with it off and on ever since, up through this past fall.

So is this a complaint? Not really, as a deliberate review and publication process is one of the hallmarks that separates long-run academic research from in-the-moment journalism. That said, I will be lucky if I remember what I actually wrote when these pieces eventually appear in print!
