Celebrating 150 Years Of Yingfa

One hundred fifty years ago this month, English and French forces sacked Yuanmingyuan, the Old Summer Palace in Beijing. As we have posted about before, all of these years later there is still lingering humiliation among the Chinese regarding that period in history when their country was subjected to a number of foreign incursions.

Given this emotional context, the marking of the anniversary in the manner depicted above was not what I would have expected. I guess I still have a lot to learn...
