The Dances At Bishop Ahr Didn't Look Like This!

While Julie and over one thousand of her closest friends (yes, there were more than a thousand local high school kids at the Holy Cross mixer this past weekend!) danced and hung out, my role was to direct traffic, be on the lookout for inappropriate behavior, and generally help make sure the night unfolded in a secure environment.

The drop off went smoothly enough, with a steady stream of cars keeping us dad volunteers busy for an hour or so. It was the pick up end of things that was crazy, what with all of those parents arriving at precisely the same moment to pick up their daughters and sons. Given that there is a loop that cars have to make to get around the school, I took to calling the crawling procession of red tail lights the "Holy Cross Beltway." The rumors I heard had traffic backing up all the way out to Rockville Pike and then down to Nicholson (Google Map it...). Moms and Dads driving by kept remarking that they hadn't been in traffic this bad since their last concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion.

In between all of the traffic mayhem, there was the craziness of the scene of more than a thousand kids filling up the gymnasium and cafeteria. For a while, I positioned myself up on the stage, so I could have a bird's eye view of what was happening down in that sea of humanity. Every now and again, I ventured out into the middle of the mosh pit, to provide some adult presence and supervision. For the most part, it was just good, clean fun going on.

Overall, I have to say that the bar has been set pretty high for our 25th high school reunion, which is coming up next month. Kids versus adults...Who will win!?
